Gap Shap with Harsimrat: Returning to the UK

We've been back in the UK for exactly 4 weeks now. What an adjustment!

I didn't expect it to be this big of an adjustment, but it has been. And that's also why I've been quieter than normal on emails and social media.

My boys, on the other hand, have taken it completely in their stride. They've embraced our new home, new clubs, new friends and a new routine.

I've had quite a few wobbles. I really loved Punjab and the slower pace of life.

But we are back and making the most of it.

As many of you know, I home educate my eldest, so we've been signing up for clubs. Last Friday we went to a "library meet up" to meet some other home educating families and it was such a lovely experience.

My eldest found someone who is very likely about to become his best friend.

At first he was shy. He stayed close to me and wasn't sure how to join in.

But slowly he came out of his shell. They started working together, studying a little, and then playing together too.

It was beautiful to watch.

Moments like that remind me a lot about learning a language.

At the beginning it can feel intimidating. You might feel shy, unsure of yourself, worried about making mistakes.

But the more you try, practise and spend time around the language, the more natural it begins to feel.

Confidence grows slowly and then suddenly you realise you're not so shy anymore.

Learning anything new often begins with that small moment of courage.

And sometimes all we need is the right environment to help us come out of our shell.
