For the last 5 months, I've been living in Punjab.
What an amazing experience!
I remember growing up, playing on the streets, knowing my neighbours, everyone looking after each other’s children – and now my boys have this too.
In Punjab, the idea that a community raises a child is still very much alive.
My boys are having so much fun with their bikes in the gali (street), playing with the other children and it’s reminded me just how powerful connection, language and culture can be.
Living here has given me a renewed sense of purpose and confidence to bring my boys up speaking Punjabi.
It has given me more confidence in our rule at home: speak Punjabi.
Watching my children speak, play and build friendships in Punjabi every single day has shown me why this is so important to know their maa boli. It allows them to live the language, connect with those around him and build those connections.
If you’re dreaming of giving your children the same confidence and connection with Punjabi – whether you’re in the UK, Canada, Australia or anywhere else – know that it is possible!
