Simplifying Dinnertime with a Punjabi Twist

Hi everyone! Ki haal hai? Sabh wadiya?

It’s been one of those weeks, hasn't it? Between work, looking after the boys, seva, and endless housework, I’m beginning to wonder – does it ever stop? This week’s been especially lively with both my boys a bit under the weather. How’s everyone else holding up? Have you all been coping with the seasonal shift (and those inevitable sniffles)?

So, in a bid to make things a little easier, I decided to bring back our weekly meal planner. Let me tell you, after a day of working from home, chasing the kids, tidying up, and keeping everyone fed for breakfast and lunch, the last thing I want to think about is dinner. Seriously – by the time dinner rolls around, my brain’s done for the day, and the thought of making yet another decision feels impossible!

Since we’re a family that’s trying to keep Punjabi alive in our everyday lives, I thought, why not have a meal planner… in Punjabi? It’s a bit of a fun challenge for all of us and really brings the language into our daily flow.

Here’s what I came up with:

Monday/Somvaar: Matar Sabzi (pea curry) – mix it up with aloo (potato), kumba (mushroom), paneer, or macaroni.

Tuesday/Mangalvaar: Chawal nal Sabzi (rice with veg) – maybe daal, rajma, chole, kari, fried rice, or matar chawal.

Wednesday/Budvaar: Aloo Sabzi (potato curry) – aloo gobi, mixed veg, falia (green beans), gajar (carrot), or bengan (aubergine).

Thursday/Veervaar: Paratha, with methi (fenugreek), saag, palak (spinach), or arbi (taro).

Friday/Sukharvaar: Leftovers or English food – because, let’s be honest, we all need a break!

…And that’s where the ideas ran dry! I haven’t quite managed to figure out Saturday and Sunday meals yet. Any suggestions? What do you all cook on the weekends – any Punjabi favourites that would be easy to add to our planner? I’d love some inspiration!
