Last Thursday, during our Adult Speaking Course, one of the students shared a story that made me smile.
He'd recently been driving to a family wedding.
His father-in-law was sitting in the passenger seat.
Now, for many Punjabi learners, that kind of journey can feel a little awkward.
You sit together for hours.
You want to talk.
You want to connect.
But when your Punjabi is limited, it's often easier to stay quiet.
Or stick to the same few words and phrases.
This time was different.
Instead of silence, he was able to pull sentences together.
He made small talk.
He asked questions.
He had a conversation with his Sora Sahib.
Nothing groundbreaking.
No perfect Punjabi.
No hour-long deep discussion.
Just a conversation.
But sometimes those are the moments that matter most.
Because learning Punjabi isn't really about memorising vocabulary lists or grammar rules.
It's about feeling comfortable enough to speak.
It's about building relationships.
It's about being able to connect with the people who matter to you.
And for this student, a car journey that would normally have felt awkward became something completely different.
A chance to chat.
A chance to connect.
A chance to be part of the conversation.
Those small wins add up.
And before you know it, you're having conversations you never thought you'd be able to have
